Copy (130 words)

Six dancers. Five drones. Endless emotions.

In this ambitious new work, Australasian Dance Collective brings art and technology together in a world-first project. Lucie In the Sky will see drones choreographed using human movement patterns to emulate emotions and personalities.

Inviting the audience into a world where humanity and technology share vulnerabilities, hopes and fears, Lucie In the Sky explores the melding of drones and dancers, humanising the drones and bringing the ‘Pixar’ effect into real life.

Complex relationships are thrust into the spotlight, as we explore the balance of power and our deep-seated need for each other. Peers. Companions. Friends. Foes.

Get ready to suspend disbelief during this incredibly ambitious project with Australasian Dance Collective, as they create a new world on-stage in a step towards our future.

#Project Scope

Lucie In the Sky

Performance work

Lucie In the Sky will be a full-length world-first project: a drone and dance show where the drones are not utilised as a swarm but as ‘individuals’ choreographed using human movement patterns to emulate emotions and personalities, challenging our perceptions of AI.

Education and Impact

Primary and secondary

We will be working alongside World of Drones Education to develop a rich suite of resources and workshops that align with both STEM and Arts curriculum and syllabus requirements. The program will roll out in schools across Australia, followed by expansion into international arenas.

Education and Impact

Tertiary

Headed by Professor Alex Zafiroglu, a team at the School of Cybernetics will work closely with the ADC team to explore how creating human-drone pairings in this performance can inform the ways we think about and design for our interactions and relationships with autonomous systems. The goal of this work is to shape a still unscripted future of human-drone pairing in other sectors and contexts.

Engagement and Reach

Documentary

We will produce a documentary following the creation and development of the Lucie In the Sky project in its entirety. Directed and edited by award-winning filmmaker Cass Mortimer Eipper, we will seek distribution through ABC, SBS, Marquee TV, and similar outlets.
